About

Brighton in Need was founded in December 2014 by myself, Lydia Sinclair. It was meant to be 1 girl, 7 days and 1 big mission. I wanted to collect some sleeping bags and rucksacks full of goodies to distribute to the rough sleepers on the streets of Brighton. I started a Facebook page and what unravelled over the following two weeks was incredible. The wonderful people of Sussex went out of their way to help me and my mission, and together we achieved something truly amazing.

That Christmas, with the help and support of the wonderful community, largely in Sussex, but donations came in from as far afield as Canada, I managed to collect and distribute over 100 winter coats, over 80 high quality or brand new sleeping bags, huge amounts of warm winter clothing, hats, gloves and scarves by the truck load, thermals, flasks, tea, coffee, food and toiletries. It was as though I had started a revolution. It was beyond what I ever thought would be possible, and so I just went with it. It was magical.
After Christmas, I took a little time to sleep and catch my breath! What had been created within the community was phenomenal, there was no way in the world I could have walked away and left it there. So with the new year arriving, so too did plans to continue this mission and set up what I hope to be a long term, ongoing success story. Of course, this has only been possible with the help and support of those that have joined this steam train and continue to help and support me in all sorts of ways. Thank you all.

What We Do

Brighton in Need aims to make regular, direct drops to rough sleepers on the streets of Brighton and the surrounding areas. The direct drops are specific, thoughtful and tailored to the essentials that are required. The Christmas drop included 32 ready made rucksacks that contained a thermal hat, gloves, scarf and socks, a waterproof poncho, a thoughtfully prepared toiletry bag, information on the drop in centres, hand and feet warmers, food and other treats. We also distributed 20 brand new sleeping bags, several winter coats, some dog food, roll mats and other items. It was a big success.

In January 2015, 50 brand new rucksacks filled with brand new items including a jumper, t-shirt, thermals, waterproofs, emergency foil blanket, hand and feet warmers, a hot water bottle, a toiletry bag and much much more hit the streets and were all distributed to rough sleepers in just a few hours.

Throughout this year, I plan to make as many drops as I can possibly do. Distributing hot meals, hot drinks, sleeping bags, roll mats and all the other essentials, ideally on a weepy basis.

Brighton in Need also works with the drop in centres in Brighton and the surrounding areas. These organisations offer invaluable services, where rough sleepers can pop in for a few hours a day for food, coffee, a shower and chat with some friendly faces. Some of these centres also offer medical help, laundry facilities and social workers and other services that are designed to help in the next level of the process. These centres rely heavily on donations and support so Brighton in Need aim to provide as much help and support to them as possible by providing them with a constant supply of the essentials that they need too.

Campaigns/News

I am currently working hard to ensure that every rough sleeper in our city has a decent sleeping bag and roll mat. This is an ongoing task as sleeping bags get wet, damaged, lost or stolen all the time.

Sleeping bags and roll mats are absolutely essential – especially in this cold weather. You can order sleeping bags and roll mats and have them delivered to Brighton In Need, Number 3, The Old Bell, High Street, Henfield, West Sussex BN5 9HN.

Brighton In Need

I started a Christmas mission in December 2014, the plan was to gather a few sleeping bags and a few warm coats to distribute to those that needed them in Brighton, however the support of the people of Sussex was so incredible that I decided to make this a real charity and make it an ongoing thing.

I work hard to raise quality and relevant donations to give direct to those in need, as well as collecting donations to provide to the shelters and drop in centres… lets keep this going and help in anyway we can, and not just for Christmas!
